Parent Support Group
Special Parents, Exceptional Children, Involved, Advocating, Learning.
Founded in 2008 by Angela Fish, SPECIAL Families of Pierce County is a parent support group for families with special needs children in the south Puget Sound region.
Our goals are:
-strengthen our special needs community
-learn from one another and expert speakers
-better advocate for our children
We are a family support group inclusive of diagnosis. We encourage professionals and interested community members to also join. Currently a majority of our families are dealing with autism spectrum disorder, sensory processing disorder, ADD/ADHD, and other diagnoses.
We do our best to provide speakers and topics that are of interest to our exceptional families. This means that we don't shy away from controversial subject matter. Our belief is that there are always opportunities to learn, whether the information is "traditional" or not, and that parents then have a chance to draw their own conclusions.
We began meeting more than 5 years ago in the Spanaway/Parkland area, finding a nice home for our meetings at the Pierce County Library Processing and Administration Center. In November 2013, we held our last meeting at this location, opting to focus on growing our newest location at the Children's Museum of Tacoma in downtown Tacoma. It has become very popular due to the availability of childcare.
Our monthly meetings
We meet on the second Thursday of each month from 6pm to 8pm. Childcare is available, but it is very limited. Advanced registration is required. To complete an intake form for your child, please click HERE. We meet at the Children's Museum of Tacoma, located at 1501 Pacific Ave, Tacoma.
Returning families must fill out a childcare form each month they intend to bring their children. You will receive an email 2 to 3 days prior to the meeting you registered for, to indicate if your child is confirmed or if they are on the waiting list. We do our best to accommodate all children, but we are limited by our number of volunteers.
We will begin charging a $5 (refundable) deposit per family for childcare each month this spring/summer. This is to help us have more accurate expectations of attendance so that we can secure an appropriate number of volunteers to meet the demand. Thank you for your patience as we implement this new procedure. Families that wish to receive a refund of their deposit can do so at the meetings, and all remaining deposits will be considered donations to help us pay for SFPC program expenses.
If you don't live in Pierce County, don't worry! You are welcome to join us no matter where you live.
